Hair Stylist Needed
Posted by kardi08 (179 days ago)
I have medium length hair and have spent a long time to be able to reach this length (my hair growth is very slow).
But the problem is that they do not look stylish at all. I have got them straightened and permed but dont want to do that anymore. Also i dont want to cut them too much. I just want someone to advice me on what style would suit me and then get a hair cut that suits me.
Also i do not want to spend an obscene amount of money on it (am willing to spend 500-800 HKD).
Can anyone help? Thanx

Kardi,I understand your frustration. There are so many stylists out there that are willing to just sell you something without considering if it suits you or fits in with your lifestyle. I am a stylist of almost twenty years and have been in Hong Kong for a short time and am quite amazed at some of the work I have seen. There are very good stylists here and also quite the contrary.Keep the faith, and a good consultation with a reputable salon should be free of charge and help you find some direction. thanks Jon

Kardi, you have many choices within your price range so you should really not have too much trouble. If you can give me some more information about what kind of stylist you would like, ie. background, origin, male, female etc I will give you a few direct recamendations.

Thanx Jon and D Man.
D Man i do not have any preference for all the options you mentioned for a stylish, having said that i have had so many bad experiences with local stylists in the past 7 years that i am tempted to say that i would prefer not to work with a local stylist, but i am flexible on that if i am convinced he/she is very good. My biggest requirement is that the person should know what they are doing, discuss with me options and then cut my hair, i would prefer a person who isnt too pushy and is able to spend some time with me to help me decide what i want rather than just go ahead and do their thing. I am an Indian and so of course a person who speaks english will be very important. Thanx in advance

Hi Kardi, ok i can give you a couple of options and I would suggest for you to go and have a consultation with them before making any decisions to see who you are most comfortable with. Also to let you know I am from The Hairdressers and will recomend a couple from our own salon but others as well.
Rennie (at TH2 on Hollywood Rd SOHO) South African, hair and makeup, very experienced and like to spend time with clients.
Renae (at The Hairdressers) Australia, very detailed and patient, hair and make up, precise and carefull
Emanuel (Emanuel F salon), French, very consistant and contemporary, takes his time, has his own 'french' style, nice guy.
Lorraine (at O2), British, very nice lady. not seen her work but heard good things. I have met her and she is very nice and very experienced.
Maggie (TH2), local gal but trained in Australia. very nice gal, patient, friendly and carefull, does not take any risks.
I could list more but i think it would start to get too confusing. As i said go for a consultation and see who you feel most comfortable with. Let me know how you get on.

Kardi,it seems you have many many choices, and D man has emphasized what i was saying. Your comfort with the personality of the stylist and also their training background are the two most important factors.I wish you luck in your search. Thanks, jon.

I am also looking for a new style. I wonder if D-Man or Jon Clifford has any further suggestions for people to try or anything further to add as the last post was some time ago!
My price range is a little higher (up t0 $1500 or so) and I really want to avoid the same finishing that I see a lot on the Chinese kids on the street.. wispy razor ends. My hair is thin enough without that. Also I want to look more "Europe fashion model" rather than "Canton Pop starlet" if you know what I mean.. (not that that doesn't look good on the kids here.. but I am European and with different hair texture than theirs.)
I should say that while I am naturally curly at the moment it is straightened by the Japanese technique. I would be happy to go back curly if the stylist thought it would be “kick a** cool!” etc

twinnee.........ok lets see what we can do for you. To get away from the problems you are having you really need to visit a more international salon as i find the local salons are very intent on this kind of thinning and razoring.
One of the problems you are going to have is due to the straightening you have. Having this it will restrict the amount of movement and elasticity your hair has thus again causing restrictions on the kind of style you can have. Of course without seeing your hair its tough to give an acurate consultation.
Here are a couple more sugestions you might want to check out
Janine @ TH2 21103123
Douglas @ THD 29730512
David @ THD 29730512
Trang @ TH2 21103123
Robin @ Paul Gerrard (not sure the number)
I hope that helps but feel free to msg me for any more info.

Twinnee,
Sorry for the late reply, I see that you have allot of advice here on where and to whom, but it does not sound like anyone is listening to your real issues. First, I can tell you are very uneasy with your relationship with stylists. It seems to me that you want to build a relationship with a stylist and have them guide you in the area of condition and over all maintenence. It also appears that you have worked with stylists that look at your hair, not your life, lifestyle abilities etc .
You mentioned above that you want someone to LISTEN to you, I cannot agree more. But moreover after all of the chemicals you have been subject to and the level of abuse your hair has tolorated you need to work from the ground up and restructure not only the cut but your approach to your entire program. You are heading in the right direction, backing away from chemicals and damage. Now you need to work on issues like rebuilding the hair and developing a long term plan that suites both your new outlook and your abilities. More often than not stylists create a shape wihtout looking into where you have been and where you would like to be. Guiding a client in this matter is not only about the design side but also must address areas such as Reconditioning, home maintence and other areas. In short it is about retraining not only your hair but your approach to your new look and long term goals.
Over the years I have met many stylists and many good Technical hairdressers, but this is only a small part of what is needed in your case. In the past you settled on situations without first developing the relationship and trust levels. I would suggest you search out someone who looks at the whole person and all of the details that accompanies, from there take baby steps and build your trust levels again. It may take you some time to find the right person but its worth the look..cheers
