Posted by janetw (849 days ago)
We are conemplating a move to Singapore and wondered if anyone has any advice on where are suitable areas to live....
We are late 30's couple with no children so schools are not an issue. we currently live in mid levels and enjoy being able to walk to central HK for dinner / drinks.
pool facilities would be good but am happy to join a gym away from home. we wlike to spend some time outside and love golf. my husband works at raffles place so he need to be able to get to work easily. any suggestions ????

Hi Janetw,
We are in the process of moving as well from HKG.
We have the same interest, in drinking, golfing, with no kids.
Unfortunately my work is close to the airport, so we have decided somewhere in the east coast.
There is some really nice places in singaore like RiverValley/Robertson Quay.

hi there
i just got back from a week and did have a look at East Coast. If we got a small house near the MRT that would be good also but was thinking about somewhere near Newton.....

I am so jealous of you and your husband. You will just love Singapore. Everything is so close, clean, convenient. I am living in Hong Kong now ........
I personally oved living in the Holland area. Great restaurants, great sized apartments(not like H.K) and lovely local people.
You will love it! I promise.

We have just moved from HK to Singapore and it really depends on your space requirements and budget. Rents have gone nuts in Singapore but the good thing is you still get more space for your money. We live east coast way and i work in Raffles Place but we were limited by budget and needed a certain size. Rent prices have gone up 100% in a lot of cases in the suburbs close to Raffles Place. However depending what you are paying in Mid Levels you may be ok close to town still.

east coast is a refreshing change - face it you're never going to catch an escalator to work here... the condo's are great for the $$$ and consider a smaller low rise block there are some bargains to be had right now! Chilling out cycling is a refreshing change... BTW I have lived innercity in Sydney and Hong Kong all my life and am coping just fine in "the burbs" - 30 something and single - if you want to go out it's a short cheap taxi :-)

Thanks for everyones replies... the move was put off for a little while but we now have a date to move in May. Are there any buildings on the East Coast that run shuttle busses ... ?? Does this happen in Singapore?? A friend suggested Costa Del Sol. Does anyone live there ? I have difficulty with this one purely based on the name. Not sure I could keep a straight face when telling my british relatives I live in Costa Del Sol ;)
Am over in two weeks to have a look around - again !! - and so far the Real Estate agents have been terrible so am going to put together my own list of buildings I want to see.
Also what about The Sails ?? Is it fully built ?? or The Icon ??

If you don’t like the idea of the Costa Del Sol, you could always try The Marbella :)

We are also moving to Singapore in May. We have a dog with us so are looking at a house with a garden and walking area for the puppy. Are there any places where the pup can be let to walk without leash, he walks really well without the leash here in DB. Any suggestions will be really appreciated

Divyaj,
there is a dog run at Bishan Park which is opened each day in the evenings where dog owners bring their dogs to run free, and socialise with other dogs.
here are some ideas for a house with a garden & walking area for a puppy. With no idea what your budget is like, the following is a rough guide.
1) Bungalows in central districts (land about 10,000 sq ft, usually half occupied by house) - $15k and onwards
2) Semi detached / terrace houses -- land size smaller than #1 - $5k and above -- this is dependent on the exact location of the house (eg house in Orchard Rd vicinity would vary from another in Novena, for instance)
3) Houses in outside of the central area can be obtained at around $6.8k, as illustrated in an ad I saw today:
-- "$6.8k new 2.5 storey semi D 6+1+nice garden and balcony. Quiet. Near Australian School"
I hope I have not confused you more than you need to. You really need to be here to know what's there in the market. Alternatively, private message me.
PS - I used to stay in HK, so am familiar with DB.... and I guess you would like something like that in singapore as well.

Divyaj,
After my earlier reply, two areas came to my mind -- which you may want to consider:
1) houses near the Botanical Gardens (big area in the Gardens where you can walk your dog)
2) houses in the east, near the beach (East Coast Park)

Hi tf_7,
Just came from a short trip to Singapore looking at houses. We did see some in Botanical Gardens and ECP. Did not particularly liked ECP, didn't look at it was pet friendly.
On the other hand the area near Botanical Gardens was just fantastic. More or less what we were looking at. Sure am gonna miss DB. Its just the best place to live. We found a couple of houees to our liking, so hopefully should get one in our budget.
Thanks all for the suggestions. Any one wants to know about the rents etc/ agents in SP right now, can leave a message. I will be happy to reply. Most of the internet agents are just useless, will not even listen to the brief you have given, but will try to throw away any house they have at you.

Hi divyaj
I am contemplating a move to Singapore with 2 cats and 2 dogs. I would be very grateful to receive any info on the rents/agents as internet searches are proving futile.

Hi everyone
We have FINALLY got somewhere to live and are moving in just 10 days :) we chose a house on Cairnhill Road as it is very central and has great space.
I have a great real estate woman if anyone wants her details pls pm me with your e mail address and i will put you in touch... not sure if I will be banned if i put the details on here ??? There is also a fantastic house search tool. www.propertyguru.com.sg all the agents work together and any houses we saw on this site I emailed them to the real estate woman and she made appts and took us there on our trip - saved us contacting lots of people and gave us continuity. Julie - our agent was then able to e mail me and tell me reasons why i wouldn't like something - it has small bedrooms like the one in the last building we saw yesterday - for example. This really takes the hard work out of the process.
Good luck everyone !!!

Well done JanetW - congratualtions.
Am joining this post as we have just been offered a transfer to Singapore from HK. but we love it here! Currently live in Discovery Bay, HK with 2 kids and despite Singapore having a great rep, worried may be a bit boring compared to HK.
Interested in tanglin Trust school and housing districys of Holland Village and Bukit Timah - only going on web surfing so could be totally wrong here.
Have looked at loads of condo pictures and horrified by all the marble styling features. After a modern style, large European kitchen, 4 beds... apartment or
boutique house with no garden (don't like snakes and bats!)
yes, recommendations for an agent for look see would be good - pls pm me!!!
Any advice???

Hey,
Saw this thread, couldn't resist posting this up, knowing what a hassle it is for relocation.
Definitely understand the frustrations of trying to find a place here while I am physically still in another location. I moved back to Singapore from Australia 2 years back and had trouble finding a place to stay. Despite being a Singaporean who has been overseas for years, I needed to take anywhere which I find reasonable so that I have a proper place to stay when I moved back.
I have an agent that I trust completely who is really efficient as well. I just had to let her know my requirements, timeframe and she makes sure she gets a couple of viewings in one day for me to look at, so that I could save time. Viewing gets really tiring after a while.
She picks up fast and know the type and genre of place I am looking at. Now being back in Singapore for 2 years, she has taken care of my moving and shifting in 2 places in 2 years.
Let me know if you need my agent's details, I will pass you her details, hopefully it helps with all the frustrations and doubts!
