Visa for Husband

Hoping someone will help provide me with info.

I am a Brit married to a HK Perm Resident. I am over here on a Dependant Visa.
Just wondering if I were to apply for a British Visa for my Hubby would we have to move to England in order for him to get the visa??
We are undecided on where we want to live and are arguing (sorry discussing) where would be best for us newly-weds to live/settle. I just want all of our options open.

Can I apply for him and then both of us still live/work here in HK or would he have to move to the UK (either perm or on short-term basis).

I emailed the enquiries section of the consul but as of yet have not gotten a reply.

You apply here in HK and your Hubby will have to go for an interview at the Consulate. Once issued you have a certain period of time, think 6mths, to actually "land" in UK. Here is the link to the Immigration rules http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/lawandpolicy/immigrationrules/

Thanks Flathunter, I have been on the website but found it all v.confusing.

Can u or someone else clarify whether he will have to remain in the UK for a specific period (it mentions something about 2yrs on the website but does not state whether this is fulltime or if he can come and go as he pleases).

Only allowed to leave UK for specific period of time if he wants the clock to tick towards British Citizenship. Best getting latest period of time direct from Consulate. Think it is 180 days, not sure.

You can apply for a "settlement visa" for the UK, similar to a dependent visa here. He must make the UK his residence, pay taxes there, etc for a period of 3 years which is when he would be able to apply for citizenship.

He cannot leave the UK for more than 180 days a year. During this time he would need to be habitually resident in UK, so as mentioned would be liable for taxes, etc even if that money is earned elsewhere.
